Breathing new life into an ageing school

This new build comprehensive school for City and County of Swansea provides over 10,500sq m of teaching accommodation, including a brand new auditorium for school productions and local theatre groups. Built in phases around the existing school buildings, the brown-field development also saw a number of the retained buildings refurbished and re-modelled. With a ‘BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating, it will set high environmental standards as the flagship school for the Authority.

A Collaborative BIM Model Design

The constrained site demanded an innovative approach to both the design, phasing and construction of the new build elements. In terms of space planning and envelope design, the entire design team coordinated the final solution through their collaborative BIM model. The contractor’s steel fabricator subsequently provided a detailed 3D fabrication model that enabled the team to eliminate virtually all steel coordination issues prior to steel erection. This minimised design errors and omissions on site and had a positive impact on programme, risk and cost.
