Academy Complex, Abu Dhabi
An energy efficient Academy providing high quality education facilities
This Academy design was based on historical built forms delivering a complex and interwoven layering of security from outer walls to inner courts to secure buildings. This complex of buildings was designed so the orthogonal interwoven plan ideas manifest themselves in the clear 3 dimensional forms of the buildings. The complex provides varying levels of security and numerous security routes that are manipulated to provide various routes to the same destination.
The Academy brief for the creation of a world class, high quality facility includes teaching accommodation, a training institute, library, apartment blocks, a conference facility, a mosque, recreational and indoor sport, outside sport and specialist facilities supported by ancillary accommodation, car parking, service and security provision.
VIP accommodation of the highest quality is provided throughout all areas of the academy complex. Clearly segregated male and female facilities are provided and integrated within the campus to provide appropriate adjacencies.
The project was designed to be an energy efficient complex that delivers a low energy solution, initially by passive means, including shading and air movement inducement and modification using wind towers and prevailing day and nights winds to modify the local environment. Shading features provide a dynamic built form creating dappled light patterning, providing a play of shadows that add interest and movement. The landscape as an integral part of this environmental tempering treatment provides places that are a pleasure to move around and spend time in, whilst enhancing the microclimate.
