Al Wakrah, Doha
A £5bn, 30 million sq ft waterfront development
Following an invitation from the Qatari Government, landscape consultancy Alshami Terra Firma (Dubai) approached Stride Treglown in June 2011 to coordinate the preparation of two masterplan concepts for a 5km stretch of waterfront in Al Wakrah, a host city for the World Cup 2022 located south of Doha International Airport in Qatar. The masterplan objectives included the provision of Government buildings, residential, hotel, leisure and recreation uses, traditional boat building and water sports activities. The competition entry required us to manage the inputs of geo-environmental engineers, commercial property, transport, cost and CGI consultants, as well as our client’s landscape architecture involvement.
Our initial site analysis report led to the preparation of both contemporary and traditional concept options: the difference being the style of buildings and the scale of intervention required. Approximately 30,000,000 sqft of development was proposed, together with extensive earth and dredging works and uses ranging from new marinas, a championship golf course, hotels and holiday islands to complement a range of water activities. Cost estimates place the development in the order of £5bn.
