A school for young women in Birmingham

Bordesley Green Girls School has a strong track record of success in an area of high deprivation. Situated in Nechells Ward, almost all students live within 1km, in an area populated by dense early 20th century housing. Almost all the students are Muslim and of Bangladeshi, Pakistani or Pathan Heritage, with a small but growing number of Somali students.

Bournville Architects carried out an extensive consultation with the school and teachers in February 2009, which determined the creation of a variety of outdoor and indoor spaces. It was also decided that the post-16 centre should be a separate and aspirational building. The school motto is ‘bringing girls greater success’ and this new building has become an essential aid to increase participation in education and strengthen achievement for young women in Birmingham.
