Burlais Primary School

Bringing inspiring learning spaces and high quality sports facilities to primary school children

Building work has been completed to create a new home for pupils of Burlais Primary School at Cwmbwrla Park in Swansea. The new two-storey school building, completed in September 2015, accommodates over 500 pupils, provides 75 nursery places and a special teaching facility for 27 students.

The original school was formed in 2011 from the former Manselton and Cwmbwrla primary schools and it was split over two sites, with buildings in a significant state of disrepair in both locations. The Council identified the need for these buildings to be replaced and for the school to be relocated onto a single, larger site more capable of meeting the school’s needs.

Its new home, Cwmbwrla Park, is situated centrally within the catchment area north of Swansea City Centre, within the residential suburb of Cwmbwrla and is an ideal location for the development of the school. This site ensures the school remains within its community and allows access to external teaching spaces and playing fields. It provides a sustainable, BREEAM ‘excellent’, 21st Century school environment where high standards of learning and teaching can be achieved.

The scheme includes hard play areas, two games courts, junior basketball and netball courts together with landscaped soft play areas designed by Stride Treglown’s in house landscape team.

As part of the development, the existing sports changing pavilion was demolished and relocated closer to the new car park. The two existing sports pitches remain available for school use and will be brought into full use for local teams.

The new school is highly sustainable and incorporates two sheltered internal courtyards, the first providing quiet outside space for the early years pupils. The second brings daylight into the centre of the building, illuminating the generous central ‘learning lounge’ resource space around which classrooms are clustered.
