A BREEAM outstanding laboratory building

The Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) demonstrates best practice in environmental construction including sustainable materials, products and renewables. The building also acts as a test bed for new environmental technology. In our role as technical architects and landscape architects for the building, our design development gave us the opportunity to address shortcomings in the energy performance of the laboratories in use.

We also applied for a number of valuable innovation credits targeting energy efficiency. From a design stage BREEAM target score of 87.17%, we are delighted to have been able to improve the performance of the original scheme and receive an Interim Certificate at design stage from the BRE of 91.57%. The bioscience wing features large ACDP Level 2 biosciences laboratories. Associated areas include constant temperature laboratories for plants and insects; tissue culture suites; proteomic, radioactive, sequencing and growth labs; post mortem rooms and autoclave suites. The cleantech wing includes a large engineering research hall; power systems laboratories and cleantech engineering laboratories.
