General teaching building, University of Wales, Newport
A fast track, quality campus building
The key drivers for this 2400sqm teaching building were communication and flexibility, with excellent vertical circulation between floors, large open plan seminar and studio spaces, and atrium break-out areas. The floor to floor heights are a generous four metres (suitable for lectures, seminars and teaching), and a raised access floor system allows future cabling flexibility.
By framing a pedestrian path from the main site entrance it creates a ‘gateway’ to the campus. The elevation to this walkway has been designed as a picture window onto the three-storey atrium area, from which the teaching areas are accessed. This vibrant façade provides visual reinforcement to the idea of a dynamic, interactive environment.
The building is naturally ventilated and this is demonstrated by the chimney vents and its atrium that wraps over the teaching spaces as a solar buffer. This was a fast-track project: A successful planning application was submitted within six weeks of project commencement. The contractor was appointed via a two-stage tender to enable complex packages to be developed early prior starting on site.
