Raising the standard of healthcare facilities in Bournemouth

Stride Treglown’s design for a new building to house services for women’s health, cancer and blood disorders at a Dorset hospital has opened. The 2,000 sq m (21,500 sq ft) Jigsaw Building is based between the Eye Unit and Derwent Suite for Orthopaedics at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Health officials have said it will be a Centre of Excellence for oncology, haematology, gynaecology, breast care and early pregnancy.

Project Methodologies
During the user group engagement we trialled the use of Revitzo software which enables the user to have complete control and walk around the proposed 3D environment. This was very successful and well received by the medical staff and stakeholders. Our Revit model had been generated to include all ADB components and took only a short time to export into Revitzo. The rewards outweighed the time taken to learn and trial this new software and the feedback has been very positive.

Outcomes
The scheme provides 2 floors of clinical and ancillary accommodation nestled within the existing nucleus template building layout. The extension is wrapped in variegated colour Trespa cladding on the first floor, punctured with ribbon window and white brick to the ground floor and an undulated roof form. The extension deliberately contrasts with the existing hospital template in both design and materiality, providing a unique focal point for the new service. This was well received by the Local Authority planning department.

The project was partially funded by the Jigsaw Charity appeal who have been engaged and involved throughout the project as part of the stakeholder team. The charity team were incredibly positive following their recent site visits to the construction site.
