Derelict casino site transformed into trendy hotel in the heart of Brighton

This 140-bedroom, ten-storey Ibis hotel is situated on Queens Road, the main high street, in close proximity to a conservation area in Brighton town centre.

It transforms a site of around a quarter of an acre, which was once used as a casino and had lain derelict for a number of years, into a busy tourist and business hub on the doorstep of Brighton Central Station. The new hotel is only a few minutes’ walk from Brighton’s world renowned landmark buildings and the delights of its grand Victorian heritage.

The scheme was the result of a winning tender submitted by McAleer & Rushe. Stride Treglown was not the original architect and we took on the planning-approved design. This proved to be complicated as it was discovered that the planning drawings did not match the site and resulted in a number of issues where we had to go back to the planners to achieve what eventually was a satisfactory and buildable hotel.

[Ibis is] the European hotel economic leader with more than 950 hotels in 55 countries offering its guests the highest level of service and the ultimate comfort of its category at the best market price – the IBIS standard guarantees a modern, connected and soundproofed room, an innovative and supremely comfortable bed, breakfast from 4.00am to 12 noon and a wide range of restaurant concepts.
