A collaborative healthcare building inspired by water

This new state of the art Primary Care Resource Centre houses a GP surgery, the Harbourside Family Practice, as well as community health services provided by NHS North Somerset PCT. The three-storey building includes 19 consulting and examination rooms, two treatment rooms, a physiotherapy suite and a gym. It performs well environmentally and has been designed to achieve a NEAT (NHS Environmental Assessment Tool) ‘excellent’ rating.

A key design factor was the integration of the two clients: the GPs and the PCT. To achieve this, we have created a central reception and shared waiting area, and The Minor Surgery suite is shared between the GPs and the PCT. All ancillary accommodation – such as meeting, training and staff rooms and the library – have been situated to facilitate use by both organisations.

The full height reception hall incorporates a beautiful and unusual glass sculpture to bring a calming and healing atmosphere to the space. The spectacular blue glass installation, designed by Opus Glass Design, was inspired by the reflections of the water in the nearby Portishead Marina.
