A masterplan for one of the most deprived parts of Newport

Stride Treglown has been working closely with Newport City Homes to establish a range of interventions for an estate in one of the most deprived parts of Newport. The resulting masterplan proposed a range of hat can be implemented either altogether as one package, or as a series of individual packages. Together, these measures will transform the area for the residents into a positive and friendly environment. The design approach taken by the design team involves opening up as much of the area as possible by significantly improving sightlines across the site (through strategic demolition of certain wings), removing the underpasses that are dotted around the estate (which attract anti-social behaviour), improving the natural surveillance over all public areas, and creating a clear separation between public and private spaces.

A key part of the design process has included working with the residents steering group for the estate, made up of approximately 6-8 individual residents. They have been instrumental in steering the masterplan towards a solution that works for the local community.

A detailed planning application is currently being determined for the demolition of a number of existing residential units, along with the creation of 11 new residential units, a new community space, and significant alterations to the existing public and highways network within the estate. Throughout the process, we have continued to engage with the residents, as well as the relevant statutory authorities, to ensure that the agreed urban design principles are applied consistently and effectively.
