A competition-winning, brownfield, sustainable community

Ransome Road is a major brownfield development in Northampton town centre. The site comprises 23 hectares of largely disused land which previously incorporated a mix of industrial uses, including a landfill site and a breakers yard. It was part of the ‘Northampton Brownfield Initiative’ – a long running, multi million pound programme to bring Northampton’s derelict brownfield land back into use. The site was assembled by the Homes & Communities Agency.

We were commissioned by Kier Partnership Homes to enter a competition to design a sustainable community of up to 600 houses. The HCA’s brief cited high design standards as one of its key selection criteria, seeking a high quality sustainable residential development with integrated landscape and public open spaces. We won the competition and have designed a new neighbourhood that accommodates a thriving, mixed community and contributes to the regeneration of the wider area. A combined project involving our architects and our landscape team, the project includes some interesting landscape details including traditional ha-has to define boundaries.
