RHUL Library and Student Services Building
A library and student services building at the very heart of the campus
The Stride Treglown Town Planning Team provided advice to the Associated Architects design team during the development of plans for a c10,500m2 library and student services building. The location of the building is at the very heart of the campus, a stone’s throw from the monumental Grade I listed Founder’s Building.
The site, occupied by a substantial number of mature trees and a curtilage listed building, could not have been more challenging. A new library building formed a key element of the 20 year masterplan that Stride Treglown had prepared for the university and which underpinned an outline planning permission.
Early engagement with Historic England and the Council’s Planning informed a comprehensive application, incorporating a robust heritage statement, integrated Planning, Design and Access Statement and assessment of key visual impacts.
Our submission demonstrated an uplift in the degraded setting of Founder’s. In this way Historic England was able to agree that the dramatic new building would not overly dominate Founder’s and that the loss of the curtilage building could be justified.
Planning permission was secured in June 2015 and the building is under construction.
