Rothley Primary School
A full-scale model primary school
This school replaces an existing school located on another site that is overcrowded and is not possible to extend without compromising external play and sports amenities.
The school has a capacity for up to 420 pupils, with two forms of entry. It also includes a 26 place nursery. However, core facilities including the hall, staff rooms, admin areas and toilets have been provided in compliance with building bulletin area requirements for two and a half forms of entry to allow for potential expansion of the school by four classrooms.
The new school site slopes steeply and to tie in with local roads and to maintain the view of listed buildings beyond the site, we located the school building at the lower, eastern end. We have created terraces on the sloping ground to create habitat and play areas. Following close dialogue with the local authority and existing school staff we interlinked some of the classrooms; created open group rooms as part of the internal street and separated KS1 and 2 into individual wings to give a sense of progress to the pupils as they make the transition through the school.
It does not seem that long ago that we were going through the design and planning process and before we know it the school has arrived. I’ve been over a couple of times recently and the building is fantastic and will make a great environment for the school and its pupils to flourish within.
