A new, cost effective academy
Stride Treglown was appointed by Futures for Somerset to carry out an initial feasibility study for the creation of the new Taunton Academy from two existing schools. Following approval of the feasibility study we worked with BAM Construction and Future for Somerset to design and deliver the new facilities. Following the Partnerships for Schools reduced capital allocation we placed a greater emphasis on refurbishment of existing buildings.
The Academy is organised around a ‘school within a school’ structure, with three learning communities referred to as Colleges, each with its own dedicated social space, an open plan ‘heart’ and ICT area, which can act as an assembly area. The colleges also have dedicated SEN areas, flexible learning spaces, social spaces, staff offices, and a lightly serviced specialist practical space. Academy staff engaged in a number of inspirational building tours to agree a design that is contemporary and cost effective. We introduced a limited palette of materials for the new facades that are robust, simple, and cost effective.
The team at Stride Treglown have delivered high quality, well considered and innovative design solutions in response to a challenging design brief. They have demonstrated the ability to balance function, form and cost, whilst working with numerous challenging constraints – resulting in a project that maximises value for money whilst still delivering architecturally. Strides have achieved this through excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, ensuring that they really understand and fully interpret the client’s requirements within their work.
