UWE Students’ Union
An all encompassing Student Union for socialising, studying and refuelling.
The Students’ Union is one of the first buildings to be constructed in the new ‘heartzone’ of the Univeristy of the West of England’s Frenchay Campus. It is a dedicated, centrally located facility providing approximately 2800m2 of space for all UWE SU trading outlets, including a reception, an engagement area, bar with kitchen facilities, café, meeting rooms, radio hub, retail and office accommodation for support staff. It has replaced the existing facility located in a less prominent area of the campus and provides a more flexible and unified space for the Student’s Union.
The Students’ Union is accommodated over two buildings with two floors of bar and entertainment space in one and office, engagement area and ancillary accommodation in the other. The bar and dance floor connect the two buildings at the lower ground floor level and open out onto an external seating terrace. The café, bar and engagement space have been designed to reflect the different individual characteristics of the Student’s Union and the unique and original style that can be found within the social scene of Bristol.
A large entrance canopy is a prominent feature within the heartzone, visible from the transport hub, main UWE Reception and the Academic Zone. The building helps to create an attractive and functional space and improves connectivity between residential and academic buildings as well as supporting campus facilities.
A large engagement space on the first floor looks out over the heart zone and provides an environment for Students’ Union staff and students to engage in an informal and friendly atmosphere.
The landscape surrounding the Students’ Union, which was designed by Stride Treglown’s landscape team, will link with the adjoining FBL development; where a continuation of the paving detail, site furniture and soft landscape is designed to provide a vibrant external public realm, whilst offering additional space for marquees and major annual events.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West, said:
“It’s a wonderful start to the new University term that we’re able to offer these fantastic new facilities to our students. This centre is about putting students at the heart of our thinking and will provide a vibrant and attractive environment for them to engage fully with the SU and what it has to offer.
“It’s our vision to build a University for the 21st Century, providing the best possible facilities for our students and the completion of this building is an important milestone in the campus redevelopment. With construction underway on the new Faculty of Business and Law Building, planning approval granted for major developments at Bower Ashton Campus and, starting in September, new teaching spaces at the Arnolfini for many of our Creative Arts students, it’s an exciting time to be at UWE Bristol. ”
