Trouble shooting and completing an unfinished project
YMCA in Stoke on Trent is now much more than a hostel. It provides a range of counselling, training and support services to young people and families throughout North Staffordshire. This project took to completion an unfinished development next to an existing hostel tower. Our brief from design& build contractor, Seddon Construction included planning and building control applications. The original scheme had failed because of inadequate project management, so we were appointed to carry out a value engineering exercise that would enable the project to be restarted with certainty of completion within budget.
The project includes:
- A leisure centre with sports hall, climbing wall and fitness centre with an outdoor gallery overlooking a multi-use games area
- A three storey building of 38 deck-access ‘Move-on’ units, providing an independent living experience for the hostel residents
- A two-storey extension to the base of the tower providing administration offices, conference rooms, support, teaching and recreation spaces, including cafe and lounge with internet workstations and spiritual core area.
The scheme adds significantly to the YMCA’s provision of support and teaching facilities for vulnerable young people in the community.
