Award winning seaside architecture
Porthcawl is a small seaside town in South Wales that in recent years has declined in popularity as a holiday resort, but that is still a desirable location in which to live. This scheme of 42 apartments is on the site of the former Esplanade Hotel, a building that had become run-down and unsalvageable. We developed our design concept from nautical and seaside references intended to reinvigorate the decaying seafront.
The bowed copper façade is the dominant feature and it contrasts with the natural stone corner tower, obliquely rendered balconies and zinc clad duplex penthouses topping the building. The apartments are configured to focus on the dramatic sea views and are accessible by lift and an open walkway to the rear of the building. We created an informal courtyard at the rear for the enjoyment of residents. The scheme was winner of an RSAW Welsh Housing Award.
