Check-in to a shipping container at Bristol Airport’s modular hotel

The Hampton by Hilton hotel, the first hotel on site at Bristol Airport, is just one part of an exciting programme for expansion around the terminal.

The 201 bedroom project leads the way in new construction technology by utilising shipping containers as modular bedrooms which are produced in a factory in China, before being shipped to Bristol. The pre-designed modules are completely factory finished and are assembled in as little as three weeks.

The modules, which include staircases and lobbies, are first signed off by Hilton representatives at the factory in China before being built and finished internally by CIMC Developments (China International Marine Containers Group Ltd).

Consisting of two bedroom wings linked by a glazed walkway at each level, forming a ‘H’ plan, the hotel is clad in a variety of metal sheets and panels, whilst the intimate internal courtyards have a warmer timber-like cladding. Together with some creative lighting it is hoped this will create an oasis of calm away from the hustle and bustle of air travel.

Facilities within the hotel include meeting rooms and lounges, a large open plan bar and restaurant, and a fitness suite for the hotel guests.

The airport, and its potential for a further extension, has been designed to accommodate the increasing demand from passengers. The approved proposed airport masterplan is gearing up for the growth from 6 million to 10 million people per year.

As such, the design quality of the hotel has been a priority for the airport team, who have recognised the importance of its position in the region.

Project architect, John Colvin adds:

“The team have been pushing the boundaries of design by fabricating the bedroom modules before a spade has even hit the ground. There is enormous potential for this method of hotel construction, providing quality hotel bedroom areas that be quickly assembled all over the world – from Addis Ababa to Vladivostok.”

An exciting project for our Bath office, who also received a Lego kit of the hotel.

Stride Treglown’s Sustainability team secured a Final BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for the hotel in April 2017, with particularly high scores achieved in the Materials and Land Use & Ecology categories.

CIMC are the owner of the completed hotel, which has been financed through CIMCs internal financing division. All modules comply with British standards and Building Regulations.
