The stated design objective by the client, Sinclair Beecham, co-founder of Pret A Manger, for the Hoxton Hotel was to create a world class, world beating product offering an exciting, new hotel that was better designed, smarter and more forward-looking that its competition and that should be – modern but classic – futuristic but familiar – new but not trendy – clever but not intimidating – fun but not kitsch. The Hoxton Hotel successfully achieved these objectives being voted ‘best UK hotel’ in the 2009 Guardian / Observer Travel Awards. In the words of Sinclair Beecham,
