‘Hub on the hill’ – An all age learning campus
Stride Treglown were appointed as architect, town planning and landscape architect for this new build 2 storey free school on the site of the existing Marine Academy Plymouth. The vision for the site was to create a ‘hub on the hill’, an all age learning campus to ensure the opportunity for early intervention in the lives of those from the surrounding community, where intergenerational workless-ness is a long term problem.
The school is based on our wide experience of standardised primary school models and comprises 2,074 sq.m. of space, providing a main entrance, reception, Hall, storage offices, 14 classrooms, toilets, external landscaping and car parking for 420 pupils. Primary pupils use some of the communal facilities on the site such as the dining area in the main community hub.
Special attention has been given to acoustics, natural lighting and ventilation, and the creation of suitable internal and external teaching environments. The building utilises a highly insulated thermal envelope, under floor heating and is designed to achieve a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating. It was completed in 2014.
The children were so excited when they walked in to their new school. It was lovely to see them explore it.
