The centrepiece of a 19th century dockland development

Gloucester Docks features a unique collection of Grade II listed warehouses. Now a residential and tourist destination, many of the warehouses have been converted into residential or office use. The Merchants Quay development is unusual in that it involves new dock side buildings in the heart of this historic environment. As a centrepiece in the docks, the design has under gone intense scrutiny by an array of local and national bodies.

The 48 apartments on the upper floors are accessed by a timber deck and core, giving residents their privacy. The ground floor is given over to restaurants, bars and cafés, which are used by the residents and the 300,000 people that visit Gloucester’s historic docks each year. This is a popular spot that blends residential with commercial, and offers an enjoyable experience for all involved.
