Contemporary design in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

A feasibility study and masterplan by City of Bath College showed that its main campus had the capacity for expansion and also a need for a new central entrance building. Stride Treglown was appointed initially to undertake a feasibility study to ascertain the viability of creating a new main entrance. We were then novated to the main contractor to provide a full design service.

We designed a three storey building, of approximately 2,200sqm, which links two of the main buildings on campus, accommodating the main reception to the College on the ground floor. Student services, a café, hairdressing and beauty salons are on the first floor, while the IT labs, classrooms and higher education study facilities are located on the second.

The project in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the City of Bath – presented particular design challenges. External materials, zinc cladding and bath stone, were selected as a modern interpretation of the palette of materials used historically in Bath, without resorting to pastiche.
