What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on to date?

A traditional oak-framed market structure in my local park. I spent eight weekends getting hands-on with the design and build of this project for our community garden. It’s rewarding to be able to enjoy a project with your community after it has been completed.

If you weren’t in this career, what would you be?

I’m motivated by the ‘making’ process so I’d still be involved in the construction industry or perhaps landscaping. Before embarking on my architectural career, I trained as a stone mason and spent several years working as a builder with a main contractor.

What’s the greatest invention ever?

As a lifetime cyclist, I would have to say cog gears. They make the ups and downs enjoyable.

Biggest career influence?

I’ve been fortunate enough to work in Japan and the Netherlands where architectural innovation, nature and traditional construction aesthetics are respected, and where buildings are detailed with exquisite sensitivity.

Best book you’ve read?

As a maker, I like practical or visually inspirational books.
