Competition winning café and cycle hub breathes new life into historic woodland

Situated within the historic woodland at the National Trust estate at Lanhydrock, the Café and Cycle Hub scheme provides facilities for 10km of new cycle trails, bringing a new offer and fresh dynamic to the estate. Stride Treglown’s competition winning concept was to create a series of single storey buildings either side of the restored original 18th Century carriage drive to Lanhydrock house, mirroring the historic gateway buildings elsewhere on the estate.

The four buildings include:

  • A 300m² café
  • A cycle hire facility
  • Plant shop
  • Visitor WCs.

The scheme is a delicate balance between modern subtle detailing and the practical requirements of a cycle hire and busy café. Planted gabion baskets of killas slate and natural oak cladding allow the buildings to blend into the woodland behind, with large areas of glazing bringing in light and views to the café space. This vibrant facility has far exceeded all visitor number expectations and has become a key destination for cyclists and families in Cornwall.
