Critical care facility for newborn babies and their mothers

This project was a complex phased refurbishment of an existing Neonatal unit on the 5th floor of Singleton Hospital, whilst continuing to provide facilities during construction. The refurbishment has produced an uplifting environment for what can be an emotionally challenging service.

The £1.2m construction value scheme has transformed the existing department into a bright, contemporary Neonatal unit with HDU, ICU and SCBU departments. A simple but effective interior design theme of the natural environment was selected for the department, to create a clean and calm atmosphere to parents and babies needing enhanced care.

The challenge of bringing the accommodation up to current standards allowed for the whole unit to be re-planned. In rationalising the services strategy, we worked closely with the clinical team to move away from the unwelcoming provision of (high level) pendants and gantries.

The remodelled department uses a wall fed services strategy, with services provision in bespoke designed low-level cabinetry in order to de-clutter the space. The enhanced visibility across the unit and the staff base locations now facilitates staffing efficiencies. This simple interior design strategy creates a clearly identifiable zone within the heart of the existing Singleton Hospital, and provides a safe and welcoming environment for staff, patients and visitors.
