Part of the South 2 Priority School Building Programme batch

As part of the South 2 Priority School Building Programme batch, Stride Treglown worked with Kier to design and deliver two secondary schools. Building on our experience of other priority school projects, we developed solutions for each site which replace the majority of existing buildings, whilst the school remains in operation.

Bitterne Park School is a specialist performing arts school which provides accommodation for 1800 students aged 11-18. The design replaces the dispersed school buildings with a 3.5 storey, single building arranged around a central, light and airy triple height atrium space.

This allows the school to maintain passive supervision across all floors, which is critical to their existing outstanding behaviour and achievement. The intrinsically efficient form of the building supports smooth student movement and the increased numbers accommodated by the new facilities.

The masterplan for the site emphasises the north-south axis, which changes the orientation of the existing site, linking the upper levels, existing sixth form block, sports hall and skills centre to the lower playing fields, new school building and site entrance point. After planning approval was achieved, works started on site in October 2015, completing in August 2017.

Working within the design team, Stride Treglown’s sustainability consultants guided both internal and external teams towards achieving a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.
