Innovation and sustainability for science and technology

Technium, an initiative promoted by the Welsh Government, is a network of business incubator units designed for science and technology. They also provide a base for international companies, new to the UK to gain a foothold. Technium Springboard, Llantarnam in South Wales is a joint initiative between Torfaen County Borough Council and the Welsh Government.

The project incorporates 2,500sqm of accommodation on three floors and is the first phase of a 5,000sqm development. The space subdivides into areas as small as 25sqm and also provides meeting rooms, conference facilities, a business support centre, breakout spaces and touchdown areas.

Sustainability was a key criterion and the building achieved Strides’ first BREEAM “excellent” rating, thanks to its north and east facing offices with circulation to the south and west. We carried out extensive research with Cardiff University to provide optimal natural lighting levels while minimising the extent of the glazing.
