Primarily involved in front-end design, Martin loves having those early conversations with clients, getting to grips with a brief and working collaboratively towards a concept proposal and, ultimately, a planning application.
His background in detailed, high-end residential projects helps to inform his conceptual designs and keep things buildable, bespoke and fun.
What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on to date?
Prior to joining Stride Treglown, I spent a couple of years working on the redevelopment of a large Grade II* listed house on a huge country estate in Devon. It was a great learning exercise, with lots of conversions of existing residential and agricultural buildings as well as a large new pool house. We really got stuck into the project and even lived on site for several days a week.
What is your proudest moment?
Achieving a distinction for my Masters – I wrote a book detailing the change in football grounds over the last 30-50 years. I like to think it justifies my many years of travelling across the country to watch my team!
Best building in your city?
It’s not a building, but a space between buildings… The new West Quay extension in Southampton has actively engaged with the old city walls, and now other new developments are doing similar. It’s great to see as the walls were left to stand unappreciated in retail service yards for so many years.
Interesting fact that nobody know about you?
I have frighteningly good map skills – I’m like a human Sat Nav!
