Preparing for the future of a major university

Stride Treglown prepared a campus development brief for the University of Reading to support the delivery of a £250m programme of capital works over the next 10-15 years. This also included a range of commercial opportunities that we identified as part of the masterplanning process.

The Whiteknights Development Plan and infrastructure proposals are the result of a comprehensive and inclusive process involving a multi-disciplinary consultant team, University stakeholders, statutory consultees (including both local planning authorities) and the general public. It presents a robust and well-conceived strategy for managing and directing change over a 10 year period across the campus.

The plan is designed to be flexible and can be reviewed to roll-forward the plan period in due course. Both local planning authorities welcomed the preparation of a land use strategy to manage change at the University. The plan represents a sound basis for future development and investment decisions linked to the delivery of the capital development programme. Commercial opportunities which were identified in the masterplanning process included a large children’s nursery, energy centre, hotel and conference centre and residential accommodation for students.
