A fast-track project benefiting from BIM

This project to remodel the A & E unit at Morriston Hospital, Swansea needed to be commenced within three months from instruction to proceed. We were appointed through its framework agreement with AMBU Health and immediately put in place a collaborative team, including the City Council planning and building control departments, so progress could be achieved within the timeframe. The project was also modelled in BIM, so the proposals could evolve with the design process using only one model.

£5m multi-phase remodelling involved an extension on two sides and reconfiguration of the ambulance bays and canopy. We achieved planning permission within three months, with only one condition and a fire plan that evolved to provide an economic solution in both the final condition and all of the temporary phases. From bubble diagrams through to loaded room layouts, all data was held within one 3D model, conveying the design to all parties in a way that was logical and intuitive. This enabled us to achieve the project objectives within the very short programme.
