The Ilfracombe Academy
Part of the Devon Priority School Building Programme batch
In a team led by BAM Construction, Stride Treglown have designed two secondary schools, South Molton Community College and The Ilfracombe Academy, as part of the Devon Priority School Building Programme batch. The two schools have provided very different challenges; from a 820 place 11-16 years school on a flat site to a 1200 place 11-18 year school on an steeply sloping, coastal cliff top.
Both sites are situated on the tops of hills in rural settings and are very visible across the surrounding area, so collaborative work between our in-house town planning and landscape teams and local planning authority was essential.
The aim was to develop sensitive but contemporary solutions to the school redevelopments. Challenges due to the extreme exposure for both the construction and long term building use were also carefully considered in the design.
Both sites were redeveloped with the existing schools operating. Due to a limited and steep site, a multi-phased project was required to enable continued occupation during construction at Ilfracombe.
Working within the design team, Stride Treglown’s sustainability consultants guided both internal and external teams towards achieving a design BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for South Molton Community College and a post construction BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for The Ilfracombe Academy.
We are really excited about the project and looking forward to sharing it with staff, governors and the community – and of course our students.
