Turning a redundant fire station into a thriving youth centre

The Grade II listed fire station in central Bristol had closed and a new use for it, funded by a £5m government grant, was found.  Stride Treglown was commissioned to design The Station, a youth centre for young people to “Be creative, try new things, be inspired, hang out, get help and advice. All in one amazing space.”

We worked closely with a young client group to develop the brief and the facilities that would be provided. We also ran the Joinedupdesign for myplace programme, promoted by the Sorrell Foundation.

This process allowed us to define the brief in detail both in terms of physical space and also how the centre would operate.

The Station has become a hugely popular centre, featuring a youth-run café, performance areas, internet café, music, radio and dance studios and counselling rooms. For more information: thestationbristol.org.uk
