A new place of learning to inspire the generation of tomorrow

Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant is a Welsh-medium primary school, located on Ham Lane East, adjacent to Llantwit Major Comprehensive School and Leisure Centre. The school has 1423m² of floor space, with space for up to 230 pupils, including a nursery.

Minor adaptations have been made to the standard Agilis template to suit the chosen site and needs of the school. A handed version of the Agilis template was considered more suitable for the Dewi Sant site and this was used as a basis for the design. The proposed layout locates the main entrance close to the existing access turning area at the site. Upon entering the building, the hall is easily accessible without needing to encounter the main teaching wing, a key benefit for potential community use. A reception office overlooks the main entrance, providing an access control point for visitors wishing to enter the building.

The teaching wing consists of a group of 8 classrooms located either side of a generous central resource space, which is a taller space with natural light provided from the high level clerestory windows. The 4 classrooms along the front of the building house the Key Stage 2 classrooms, whilst the classrooms to the rear are Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1. The central resource space is a large open plan area that is subdivided in to group areas, learning resource area, ICT area and a practical area. This will be a valuable resource that is accessible to all pupils in the school through timetabled use. A local artist will be commissioned to work with the children to produce artwork to be displayed on the building, possibly in the form of glass art to the clerestory windows.

Stride Treglown Management have been commissioned to undertake a BREEAM assessment for the development. The potential score and rating for the project, generated at pre-assessment stage is 74.1% “excellent”. The “excellent” score is a Welsh Government funding requirement.
