An underused site redeveloped to create twelve much-needed affordable homes and a new clubhouse in Slough.

Located to the northern edge of Slough, this development provides twelve affordable homes together with a new club premises on a site formerly occupied by Britwell Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

The land on Wentworth Avenue was previously underused and dominated by an oversized club building. The redevelopment improves Slough’s housing stock by providing much-needed affordable family accommodation for the council, while retaining the clubhouse.

The spacious 3-bed houses are simple in form, solid and built to a high standard to create a well-designed urban space, which complements and enhances the surrounding area.

The materials used – brick and concrete roof tiles – match the local palette whereas the scale and height of the dwellings contributes to the variety of street and roof scape. A clear ‘front and back’ relationship has been created through a fenestration layout which is typical to the existing houses around the site.

All houses feature a generous private garden, to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of its residents, as well as cycle storage and allocated parking spaces. They are designed in line with the lifetime homes standards.

A generous amount of planting was introduced to the site to create a planted elevation to the street and to form soft subdivisions between external spaces and screen the parking.

An extensive, collaborative consultation process was undertaken with the local planning officers and the club members. Incorporating many of their suggestions into the design has resulted in a successful integration of the scheme into the neighbouring areas.
