Instagrammable social/study spaces for students living in ‘The Steel City’

Following on from our four previous schemes delivered for Fusion Students in Cardiff, Nottingham and Hatfield, Stride Treglown was appointed to lead the Interior Design for their latest developments in Sheffield and Swansea.

Fusion Sheffield offers approx. 860 beds varying from self-contained studios to shared facility accommodation and one-bed apartments. As with all our Fusion schemes, the Sheffield site provides students with a variety of places to study and socialise in a homely environment.

The interior design concept is inspired by research into the local area and Sheffield’s history:

  • Its industrial past, ‘The Steel City’.
  • Its thriving music and theatre scene.
  • Having the largest ratio of trees to people in any European city.

Darker colours have been paired with soft edges to the furniture and fittings to help create cosy, inviting environments for day-to-night use.

The Sheffield site offers the same fantastic facilities that have been well-loved at previous Fusion schemes such as a karaoke room, gaming rooms and private dining facilities. It also offers several new unique spaces including:

The Story Den

The Story Den is a ‘coffee shop’ style library with a mixture of comfortable, flexible seating. Fusion requested a quiet space that would encourage students to study either alone or in groups and provide an environment where book and reading clubs would be welcome. A full-height shelving unit with built-in fireplace has been included in preference over a television, this is intended to create a no-tech zone encouraging students to turn off from the everyday buzz of technology.

The Event Space

This is a large open plan multi-functional area which can transform throughout the day. The space includes a functional kitchen, bench-style seating and area for a pop-up coffee barista in the day / performance zone in the evening. As well as this re-fillable food dispensers will be installed in the kitchen providing students the opportunity to stock up on kitchen essentials in a zero-waste manner.

The Hide-out

Taking advantage of Fusion’s concept of creating ‘instagramable’ spaces, Stride Treglown has included a treehouse inspired hide-out in the entrance foyer. This makes reference to Sheffield’s vast green spaces throughout the city whilst also providing a place for students and/or visitors to sit, socialise or utilise as a waiting area.

The scheme is due for completion in summer 2021, ready for students to move in for the new academic year in September.
