West Cornwall Hospital Outpatient Department

West Cornwall Hospital’s new £9 million outpatient department consolidates aged and outdated clinical spaces into one all-purpose facility, making it easier for people in and around Penzance to access care, and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust get more from its estate.
Accessible and Fit for the Future
The new department supports a wide range of outpatient services, from general appointments to more specialist clinics. Most rooms are flexible and multifunctional, while a handful have been tailored to specific needs in collaboration with clinical teams.
Its impact is especially significant given West Cornwall’s geography. With Penzance and the surrounding communities remote from larger acute hospitals, accessing specialist care has historically meant lengthy travel. By consolidating services into one digitally enabled facility, patients can receive more of their care closer to home—supported by virtual consultations where appropriate.
Making Better Use of the Estate
The project also forms part of a wider strategy to modernise the Trust’s community estate. The new facility replaces a fragmented collection of clinical rooms with a more efficient, adaptable building, which helps streamline patient care and improve service delivery.
With outpatient services now under one roof, space elsewhere on the site can be repurposed for staff accommodation and welfare facilities—supporting staff retention and making better use of a constrained site.
Improving the Staff Experience
The upgrade represents a significant step forward for clinical teams who were previously working in aged and non-compliant conditions, including buildings affected by asbestos. The new department is clean, bright, and technically equipped, offering a safer, more comfortable environment that better supports face-to-face and remote care.
