Conversion of the Grade II listed Rosenberg House into state-of-the-art senior living apartments
The Grade II listed Rosenberg House, located in the historic centre of Bath, incorporates a Georgian façade by John the Elder as well as a 1970s neo-Georgian addition. Stride Treglown has remodelled the whole building to convert it from 22 almshouse flats into 15 spacious and accessible apartments to provide state-of-the-art accommodation for St John’s Hospital.
The challenging refurbishment included extensive structural modification including the insertion of a new internal atrium into the existing structure and the relocation and expansion of the lift and stair core to connect all levels. The exterior has been retained with double-glazing and new roofs with photovoltaics to some areas introduced to increase energy efficiency. A new entrance ramp improves accessibility for residents and visitors.
The sustainability of the project is inherent in the reuse of the existing building which also makes an important contribution to reducing carbon emissions, whilst also enabling residents to remain living in the city centre.
Rosenberg House will provide high quality homes for St John’s residents who were living in its existing almshouse accommodation which, while much loved, had not been updated since the 1970s. The creation of the new atrium brings daylight into the heart of the building, making communal areas bright, airy and uplifting, whilst Stride Treglown’s Interiors team conceived a palette of neutral but warm materials as a backdrop for residents to personalise. The renovation has also enabled new facilities including an assisted bathroom, a guest room and communal lounges to be introduced.
Cora Kwiatkowski, Divisional Director for Stride Treglown, said “We are very proud to be involved in this project for this fantastic charity. The extensive refurbishment has been a challenge but the interior of this building, which was so dated is now unrecognisable. Residents will be able to enjoy not only high quality spacious apartments but also additional facilities within the daylight-flooded atrium which will strengthen the community in Rosenberg House further.”
Sue Porto, Chief Executive for St John’s Bath, added: “We are thrilled with Stride Treglown’s work – it is such a thoughtful renovation and most importantly, they have listened to our brief and the needs of our residents. We are all so pleased.”
James Edmonds, Property Portfolio Manager for St John’s Bath, said “The space has been totally transformed to create bright modern homes fit for 21st Century living.”
