Celebrating a construction tour de force

As Dave Bayliss announces his departure from Stride Treglown, we say thank you to a colleague who has left an enduring mark on both our Plymouth studio and the wider South West construction industry.

Dave joined Stride Treglown in 1988 as a technician, weathering the recession of the late 80s where his early work on social housing projects laid the foundation for what would become a diverse and impactful career.

His exceptional ability to embrace new challenges became evident as technology transformed the industry. From the early days of AutoCAD on Amstrad computers to diving under desks to develop “DIY IT solutions” (his words), Dave always refused to put barriers up to innovation and growth.

Throughout the ’90s and 2000s, Dave was instrumental in numerous projects that shaped our Plymouth studio, including The Cumberland Centre which remains an important healthcare facility today, and Torquay Academy.

His career progression from technician to project manager marked a significant evolution—and one that threw him in at the deep end. Sometimes quite literally. From dredging the River Tamar for the Plymouth naval base, to constructing 10 miles of high security fencing for the MoD across North Devon terrain, Dave developed the versatile skill set that would make him the natural choice to lead the Plymouth studio.

Becoming Regional Director in 2017, Dave always encouraged the team to learn with an open mind and get out on site—understanding how buildings come together in real life, not just on a screen. Under his leadership, the Plymouth studio grew to 28+ people, cemented its reputation in the region, and even got a new lick of paint. Thankfully the Amstrads are long gone.

Outside of the office, Dave has been Chair of Building Plymouth for the past few years, where he’s championed construction as a career choice for young people, growing membership from 16 to over 70 organisations along the way.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dave for his 37 years of dedication. From his thoughtful leadership of our Plymouth studio to conquering stages of the Tour de France, his passion and commitment have been inspirational. We wish him every success in his new role at Obedair Construction, where his influence will undoubtedly continue to shape the industry.

Thank you, Dave.
