What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on to date?
Derby Business School for the University of Derby was an exciting project to be a part of. The university was seeking out a new home for the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences. The complexity of the project required a wide range of expertise to come together as it came at the end of the pandemic and really forced us to rethink traditional university lecture and teaching spaces.
If you weren’t in this career, what would you be?
Maybe something to do with languages — I speak 3 different languages, Arabic, Dutch, and English, and would have considered a career in international relations or language-related fields where effective communication across cultures is essential.
Interesting fact that nobody knows about you?
I’ve lived in the Netherlands for most of my early teenage years, the hilly terrain of UK still often makes me lightheaded!
Biggest life/career/cultural influences?
Islamic architecture: A cultural beacon. Through its mesmerizing geometric patterns and majestic domes, it speaks volumes about its rich heritage and identity.
What does inclusion mean to you?
I strongly believe in the power of representation and inclusivity. Throughout my journey to becoming an architect, I faced a significant lack of mentors who shared my background, which made it challenging to pursue my aspirations. That’s why I’m committed to providing support and guidance to upcoming architects and those in the design field. I aim to do this through mentoring and actively engaging with universities and other educational platforms, ensuring that aspiring architects from all backgrounds have the encouragement and resources they need to succeed.
