Gabriel has a keen interest in town centre regeneration and placemaking. Over the course of his career, he has contributed to a diverse range of projects, including town centre and residential masterplans, detailed public realm design schemes, and large-scale infrastructure developments.
What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on to date?
I wouldn’t say it was my favourite, but one of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on recently was a small supported community for neurodiverse people in Bath. We had just two months to reach full planning submission, so it was pretty intense! What made it stand out was the level of care needed in the design — it wasn’t just about making the place look good, but about creating a space that really worked for the residents. That included using a mix of plant species to help stimulate the five senses and create a calming, engaging environment.
Best building in your city?
I’m a big fan of industrial-style red brick buildings, like 17–19 Clare Street — a Grade II listed building designed by Alfred Waterhouse. I also really like the old tobacco buildings around Bristol, including the Tobacco Factory, Factory No.1, and the Bond Warehouses.
Interesting fact that nobody knows about you?
My grandad was a professional footballer back in the 1950s — he played for West Ham, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth. Unfortunately for me, his skills didn’t get passed down!
Best book you’ve read?
I’m not much of a reader, but after a mate recommended it, I picked up Station Eleven — and I’ve never read a book so quickly! It follows the lives of three people across different timelines, one of which is set in a post-pandemic world where 90% of the population has been wiped out. The way their stories intertwine is really clever. They’ve also made a TV adaptation, which is well worth a watch too.
Biggest life influence?
My grandma. She was incredibly open-minded — especially for her time — and had a real love for travel. She definitely inspired me to get out and see as much of the world as I can.
