James is a Senior Associate Architect with a passion for delivering high-quality, sustainable projects across Devon and Cornwall. He’s proud to consider himself an allrounder, with experience across a wide range of sectors.
James is often involved in projects from inception to practical completion. This allows him to build and develop strong collaborative working relationships with clients and consultant teams alike.
In recent years his focus has increasingly turned to the more pastoral aspects of practice, managing teams and developing junior team members at the early stages of their career.
James, what are the key challenges that affect your sectors, or are likely to in the next five years?
Reducing our embodied and operational carbon requires close collaboration and importantly, innovation within an industry that can be resistant to change and risk-averse. I see this as a major challenge across many sectors. I believe that extensive research into cost effective zero or low carbon cement alternatives along with a cultural shift towards using structural timber will lead to a meaningful reduction in our carbon emissions. We must be advocates to realise positive change.
If you weren’t in this career, what would you be?
An artisan furniture maker. I respect anything beautifully made and have an affinity for timber. My parents were building contractors for over 30 years. Witnessing how spaces are constructed or transformed has had a significant influence on my career choice.
What advice would you give your 20 year old self?
Focus less on the outcome and learn to love the process. Commercial projects have a long-life cycle. Lots of small positive steps will lead to success. Understanding what you are and aren’t in control of is the key to longevity.
Interesting fact that nobody knows about you?
I have a Masters in structural engineering and have worked for a number of engineering consultancies. This deeper understanding of structures allows me to more readily collaborate.
Best building in your city?
I’ve only lived in Truro for three years but I’m in awe of Truro Cathedral. And the recently renovated Hall for Cornwall is a great venue for standup comedy.
What’s the greatest invention ever?
The hot cross bun!
