Matt Abbotts

Senior Technologist

Matt designs and delivers challenging projects within the healthcare sector across various NHS sites up and down the country.

Outside of work he is a keen traveler, photographer, and artist. Living a stone’s throw from the coast, he likes to go for the odd beach walk and pub pint in his spare time.

What is the current big trend in your sector?

An overwhelming trend in healthcare over the last few years is an emphasis towards offsite construction. Although great in principle, it requires an exacting attention to detail within the design stages. Collaboration and communication between disciplines is key!

What’s your favourite project you’ve worked on to date?

Prior to working in the Healthcare sector, I worked on a residential project right by the beach in Perranporth called ‘The Dunes’. It was a challenging project located on a cliff – the site visits took place come rain, shine, or wind!

If you weren’t in this career, what would you be?

I’ve always wanted to be a mini-land creator at Legoland! Who else wouldn’t want to build Buckingham Palace, even if it is in miniature form?!

What advice would you give your 20 year old self?

Read more books and watch less Top Gear.

Best building in your city?

If you can class St Ives as a city (not formally but it does quadruple in size in the summer), the best building in my opinion is the Tate St Ives art gallery. A mixture of striking forms and housing the renowned works of Barbara Hepworth, it is a great place to escape to for an afternoon. The top floor café overlooking Porthmeor Beach provides the best setting for a cup of tea and a spot of surfer watching.
