An innovative building for architecture students

Stride Treglown’s building for the Faculty of Environment and Technology at the University of the West of England gained a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. It consists of 2,700sqm of teaching and office accommodation, informal learning spaces, a café, conference rooms and social spaces. The building adjoins an existing studio and we have carefully managed pedestrian flows to and within, including a new entrance and plaza. We have used a number of innovative technologies and materials to deliver an environmentally sustainable building which is used as a teaching tool and an example for the architecture and design students who inhabit it.

We have provided high levels of natural daylight through large areas of solar controlled glazing and louvres. Sustainable materials used include a new prefabricated straw bale cladding panel which encloses a 150 seat lecture space. The building is the first to use a new rain screen cladding tile made from recycled slate and clay dust. A bio-fuel boiler and rainwater harvesting are also incorporated. The scheme is the prototype for a new form of development principle at UWE, providing flexible teaching and social space which informed our thinking for the development of the campus masterplan.


Stride Treglown has provided CDM services to the University of the West of England (UWE), within R Block, the new School of Architecture. It includes a 150 seat lecture theatre, specialist teaching spaces including IT, break out and conferencing rooms and offices, all of which are naturally ventilated. Phase 2 included the teaching of construction and design courses for the Faculty of Environment and Technology and includes a glazed link between the two buildings with the ground floor comprising a flexible café/resource area opening into a plaza.

Our CDM experts advise on construction health and safety risk management, and manage the flow of health and safety information between Clients, Designers and Contractors, focusing on the following:

  • Assessment of designers and contractors for competence to carry out their work without risk to health and safety with designers adhering to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, when required by the Client
  • Ensuring that health and safety is an integral part of the design, construction and management of design projects
  • Improve planning and management to identify hazards so that these can be eliminated or minimised and properly managed
  • Encourage co-operation and co-ordination, emphasing the importance of competence at all levels
