Even the smallest of places can contain the ingredients for lasting change. Standing in the garden at Woolwich Common Community Centre, that truth comes through loud and clear — even behind the clatter of pans and the rhythmic chop of knives.

Two years ago, we sat with a group of Central Saint Martins students to explore a simple question: how can an outdoor kitchen tackle waste? In a room buzzing with live drawing and lively debate, the crumb of an idea took hold — a portable kitchen where people could gather, cook, and learn.

Fast-forward to today, and the kitchen is in full service — Chef Brian, cooking and teaching at its worktops.

This summer, we went back to Woolwich to catch up with the team and see the kitchen doing what it does best.

What we found is a place that nourishes both community and soul. Somewhere neighbours from across Woolwich can feast, meet with friends, and build lasting connections.
