Bringing a derelict building back to life

Located on a brownfield site on a main commuter route in Bristol, this project represents an important step in bringing a significant, but derelict, building back to life.

The scheme comprises of 92 studios above student communal and retail space at ground level, all arranged around a central courtyard.

Originally built in the 1890s as the People’s Palace Theatre, the building was later used as a cinema and a series of nightclubs before closing its doors in 2008.

The site is heavily constrained on all sides with buildings around the north, east and west of the site. These buildings are positioned by the site boundaries meaning we had to apply for a total of 23 Party Wall Awards. Combined with this, was the locally important façade which had to be retained and restored.

McLaren Property and Stride Treglown worked closely with the Local Authority to ensure that our proposals to create contemporary studio living respected the historic fabric.

Stride Treglown has delivered yet another brilliant scheme for McLaren. With the challenges faced in retaining the historic façade, they have injected a new lease of life to create a standout building in the heart of Bristol. We look forward to working alongside Stride Treglown in the future to deliver more schemes of such a high quality.
