Two schools amalgamate to create an exciting new learning environment for children of Marlborough

The new 2 form entry school will accommodate 420 pupils + 20 ASD pupils in an integrated facility. The scheme is part of the EFA Priority School’s Building Programme and is the final school of South Batch 2 which includes Bitterne Park and King Richard School, both of which are also being delivered by Stride Treglown and KIER.

A single story solution was required for the school to realise the schools vision for truly integrated facilities. Each of the SEN resource bases operate as part of the KS1 and KS2 (mainstream) areas to give an accessible, seamless co-located environment. SEN pupils will join their peers in mainstream classes where suitable, although the units are designed so that pupils could spend the complete school day there as required.

The steeply sloping site and requirement to build the new school behind the existing school whilst it remained in operation made a single storey solution challenging.

The design developed to achieve two KS wings, springing from the community hub, with a sheltered courtyard opening onto the wider mature landscape offering secure and exciting sensory and social areas for all ages.

An interim BREEAM certification of ‘Very Good’ was secured by Stride Treglown sustainability consultants, with a particularly high percentage of credits being obtained in the Water and Pollution categories.
