Part of the North West batch of the Priority School Building Programme

Stride Treglown have designed six schools in Manchester, the Wirral and Cheshire as part of the North West batch of the Priority School Building Programme.

Having previously been involved in developing standard primary and secondary ‘model school’ designs for Morgan Sindall, we have adapted these for the range sites and school specific briefs, through consultation with the EFA and the schools.

Development of a ‘kit of parts approach’ and ‘signature specification’ have contributed to a flexible design strategy that is flexible enough to respond to the diverse range of schools and site specific challenges across the batch. All the schools are being rebuilt on their current sites and must continue to operate during construction whilst new buildings are constructed.

Plymouth Grove was the sample scheme of the batch, which expands an existing school on its current site.

The existing school building could not cater for the larger pupil numbers, having been designed during the Victorian period and for fewer pupils.

It required extensive modifications to the building fabric to reduce heat loss, which could not be done whilst in operation and therefore new school buildings were required.

A Grade II listed building adjoining the site meant that the existing school building was considered ‘of historical merit’ and a sensitive approach to the new building design was required.
