An ambitious project to provide an exciting visitor experience in three Grade II listed buildings

The Plymouth History Centre is an ambitious project that will bring together many regional arts and heritage collections into three Grade II listed buildings; Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery, Central Library building and St. Luke’s Church to provide an entirely new and exciting visitor experience. It will be a transformational project that will create a place, experience and service to share the stories and collections of Plymouth and its people with the world.

The project is to be largely public funded, primarily by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The application was made to the HLF for £12.5m – representing some 25% of the HLF’s annual UK budget. This was a massive ask on behalf of our client; Plymouth City Council. To support this huge application Stride Treglown assembled a multi-skilled team of experts including architects, conservation specialists, urban designers, planners and BREEAM assessors who worked tirelessly with Plymouth City Council’s Arts & Heritage team and the wider Local Authority for over 2 years to optimise the information for the bid.

In May 2014 we were delighted to learn that the HLF earmarked more than half of the cash needed (a total of £12,873,500) for the city to create the much anticipated £21m ‘History Centre’ that will breathe life into the city’s world-famous figures and most precious historic collections. The project is now in the development phase.
