Award winning low carbon superstore

At the time of completion, this was Sainsbury’s flagship eco-store and the first of their carbon step-change stores to be completed.

This award-winning timber framed building with a graceful curved roof is heated using a biomass boiler fired by locally sourced wood pellets. There are large sections of curtain walling at the checkout areas and the 750mm diameter sun pipes over the sales area reduce the amount of artificial lighting needed.

Other sustainable measures include recycled aggregates within the Terrazzo floor finish and concrete, rainwater harvesting, locally sourced materials to reduce delivery distances. Two 21m high wind turbines generate electricity and recycled plastics have been used wherever possible.

Fulfilling the needs of the retailer while still using sustainable technologies and materials was a huge challenge, but Stride Treglown were able deliver this pioneering store and meet the performance requirements with an elegant and considered solution.
